China expressed regret on Wednesday regarding the US decision to quit the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Authorized by the UN General Assembly, the council is an important platform for countries to conduct dialogue, cooperation and exchanges, and to jointly promote the development of the human rights cause, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing.

China has been consistently advocating and committed to guarding multilateralism, as well as supporting the council's work to promote and protect human rights worldwide, Geng said.

China will continue to work with other countries to contribute to the healthy development of the international human rights cause through constructive dialogue and cooperation, he said.
