The origins of the event can be traced back to 1981, when it started at Minyuan Stadium, one of China's earliest sports arenas. The stadium was established by Eric Henry Liddell, a Scottish Olympic gold medalist who was born in Tianjin.
In recent years, the marathon has predominantly been held in suburban districts, including Wuqing district.
