Since the construction of the first bridge over the Ili River in September 1971 — which ended the long-standing separation of the riverbanks — seven bridges have been built, creating a comprehensive cross-river transportation network, according to local authorities.

Yuan recalled the difficulties of transporting ripe plums to the town across the river, which involved a long, bumpy journey that often left the fruit wilted and less valuable. With the opening of the new bridge, she will transport her freshly picked plums to market in just a few minutes, preserving their quality and ensuring better prices.

Local businesses will also benefit from the bridge. Shi Huan, a store owner in Qapqal county, said the new bridge will further facilitate her business.

"I run a supermarket and travel to Yining every day for supplies. Previously, it took more than 40 minutes each way, but it will be just a 20-minute drive after the bridge opens," Shi said.

The opening of the new bridge later this month is expected to dramatically shorten travel times, boost the transport of local agricultural products, and enhance tourism routes, thereby supporting the integrated development of the region.
