Anti-graft watchdog warns against festival gift buying

By An Baijie (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-05-29 14:42

China's top anti-graft watchdog warned government officials on Thursday against spending public funds to buy gifts ahead of the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival.

The public can submit whistle-blowing posts to expose the buying of gifts such as zongzi, a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, with public funds through the website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China, according to a statement of the CCDI.

It's a tradition for Chinese to eat zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on June 2 this year.

Government officials found to have bought gifts with public funds during the festival will be punished and have their names publicized on the commission's website, the statement said.
