HAIKOU - A former Chinese marine surveillance official from southern China's Hainan Province has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for bribery, according to a court ruling on Monday.

Zhang Guangliang, 52, former head of the Hainan Marine Surveillance Corps, was found guilty of accepting bribes worth 1.02 million yuan (166,179 U.S. dollars) between 2004 and 2013, according to the Hainan No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

Zhang was also fined 200,000 yuan.

He was also found guilty of receiving 140,000 yuan in bribes from BDStar Navigation Co. Ltd in 2009 when Hainan Marine Surveillance signed an agreement with the company to buy 105 shipborne terminals to build its Beidou satellite positioning and communication network.

He was also found guilty of taking advantage of his post to help others make personal gains in program bidding and ship repair.

Hainan Marine Surveillance is responsible of patrolling the South China Sea.
