Iceland's fairytale still being written

By Agence France-Presse in Paris | China Daily | Updated: 2016-06-24 08:50

Iceland co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson jokingly suggested Wednesday's historic 2-1 win over Austria at Euro 2016 would force the Nordic island country to change its national holiday.

Iceland, with a population of around 330,000, is the smallest nation to qualify for a major finals, and its team strode into the last 16 and a meeting with England after consigning Austria to a premature exit.

"I would guess we will change the national holiday. It's normally on June 17, but they will probably change it now," said Hallgrimsson, referring to Icelandic National Day, which commemorates the country's independence from Danish rule in 1944.
