A national road network plan concerning two cross-Straits highways linking Fujian province and Taiwan is attracting much attention, and one of the highways is likely to pass through Pingtan county in Fujian.

The National Highway Network Plan (2013-2030) was recently approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, and the other cross-Strait highway will link the mainland Chinese city of Xiamen and Kaohsiung city in Taiwan.

The plan does not specify if the highways involve the construction of cross-Straits bridges or undersea tunnels - but either option would be an unprecedentedly massive project.

Once the two highways are completed, it will be possible to reach Taiwan by road from the capitals of most provinces and cities with population exceeding 200,000, as well as from most important transportation junctions and key border ports.

By 2030, 11 state highways - stretching 4,100 kilometers - will run through Fujian province, compared to the current 7 state highways in the province. And the number of national highways in Fujian will increase from 5 to 16 to a total length of 7,100 kilometers, according to the plan.
