Are literary classics really fit for children?

I began liking classics long after I finished school. I think schools make a serious mistake in foisting classics upon our soft minds at an age when our minds are not ready and we cannot relate to the protagonists in the tales because they are so removed from our way of life and our thoughts. In China I noticed that the few who study English literature begin by studying classics, and that to my way of thinking is an invitation to kill any genuine interest. Literature should be taught in anti-chronological order from today's writers to the ancients.
