Students commemorate 'September 18 Incident'

Guizhou University students sign a 91.8-meter banner in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, on Wednesday, Sept 15, 2010, to mark the 79th anniversary of the historic Sept 18 incident that became known as national humiliation day. The bitter memory dates back to Sept 18, 1931, when the invading Japanese Kwantung Army blew up part of a railroad owned by a Japanese colonial company near Mukden (now Shenyang) in southern Manchuria, and then accused Chinese troops of the sabotage. The Japanese militants used the incident as a pretext for larger scale war against China and conspired to establish the puppet Manchukuo government in the northeast the following year. The event is also known as the Manchurian Incident. The Guizhou University students clad in uniforms are getting military discipline training, which is almost a prerequisite to college life in China.
