Pawel Sawicki said Thursday that the page on the social networking Web site opened earlier this week and already has around 1,000 subscribers who left messages in English, Hebrew and Polish.

Sawicki says Facebook is currently the best tool to reach young people around the globe. He says the memorial's 1 million annual visitors are primarily students and other young people.

The site offers information but also an opportunity for discussion, with the participation of the museum staff. The museum also has its own YouTube site.

The Nazis killed some 1 million people in Auschwitz, mostly Jews.
