A team composed of retired judges to help mediate civil and commercial disputes was established by the Beijing Haidian District People's Court in August.

This was the first time that a Beijing court has set up such a mediation team with all silver-haired members.

Qi Ji, president of the court, emphasized the important role that retired judges play in advancing the country's development of the rule of law. He noted that their rich experience in adjudication and mediation can be invaluable in resolving disputes and mentoring younger generations to enhance their case-handling skills.

According to the court, the team has included seven retired judges, averaging 66 years old and each with 30 to 40 years of legal experience, whose mediation expertise covers areas such as family and marriage, contracts, and property rights.

While encouraging more retired judges in the capital to join the team, the court added that it would also ask these seniors to provide law education in communities to help residents enhance legal awareness and benefit from legal services in a more efficient manner.
