New Greek PM expected Tuesday: govt official

Greece's Prime Minister George Papandreou holds an emergency cabinet meeting at the parliament in Athens November 8, 2011. Greek party leaders struggled on Tuesday to agree on a new prime minister, with the rest of the nation and the EU clamouring for a deal on a unity coalition now to save the country's finances and end the chaos threatening the euro. ATHENS - A senior Greek government official says an announcement on who the country's new interim prime minister will be is expected some time Tuesday.

The official says current Prime Minister George Papandreou gave no indication of whether the announcement "will be in the evening or tonight." The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of a Cabinet meeting held Tuesday.

Papandreou has been in talks with opposition leader Antonis Samaras for a second day, trying to hammer out a power-sharing deal amid intense European pressure to end the country's political deadlock. The two agreed over the weekend to create an interim government that will shepherd the country's new European debt deal through parliament.
